Everything from getting down on their eye level, physical touch, and committed attention makes a big difference. When it comes to fostering self-discipline and self-esteem, children need CONNECTION more than anything else! So, what can we do to build a stronger connection with our child?
Tip #1: The Ritual Of Play
It’s suggested that at least 10-minutes of ‘connect’ time each day will make a big difference! During this time, our kids needs to have our FULL attention and FULL engagement.
And the best way to do that is through PLAY!
If we really want to connect with our child, then it’s not enough to take him or her to the playground and watch from the sidelines. We need to play too!
More than anything else we can say or do, taking time to play with our kids really shows them that we really love them!
Tip #2: Boost their Neurotransmitters!
We can “up” our child’s neurotransmitters to build a better parent-child connection, which means improving our relationship with them by giving them positive reinforcements in a variety of ways that will allow them to thrive, feel happy, and be healthy.
- Tell your child about something that is going to happen that is exciting,
so they can look forward to it. This improves the neurotransmitter Dopamine which is the anticipation chemical.
- Hugging our kids lets them know they are important. Oxytocin is the chemical that reacts through touching.
- Give children praise for good behavior or a job well done. This improves Serotonin which is about feeling satisfied.
- Finally, give your child the chance to run and play or engage in a fun physical activity, especially when they are stressed or feel anxiety. Endorphins are engaged through active movement.
Tip #3: Give Them the Lead!
We can join their ‘world’ by letting them decide the activities and pace. This includes teens too!
By improving our connections daily, we begin to eliminate some of the obstacles in our communication with them which also eliminates stressful interactions
