When we are ‘tuned-in’ with our children, we can more easily understand how to help them become the best version of themselves . We can learn where our children are in his or her stage of development physically, intellectually, emotionally, and socially so that we can understand what’s ‘developmentally appropriate.’ This involves getting inside the ‘child’s world’ and supporting it, rather than staying in the ‘adult world’ and trying to constantly correct mistakes.
When it comes to fostering self-confidence and independence, ATTUNEMENT is a powerful word to remember!
Keep in mind, learning to be ‘attuned’ with your child takes time and effort, and is a process of trial and error… No matter how well you know your child, there will often be mixed-signals on whether certain behaviors or characteristics are ‘strengths’ or ‘areas for potentialimprovement,’ so my suggestionis to do your homework on his or her stage of development as a starting point for your observations.
We can also keep in mind that every child is different, and what may seem like an area where your child is falling behind, does not exactly indicate your child needs immediate help or is a reason to be concerned. After all, you are the parent, and your natural parent instincts are the true factor when helping your child become the best version he or she can be.
Attunement all comes down to how well we know our children and their moods, and how well we know ourself. Start thinking about how you can help your child use the right behaviors by being more attuned to their development, behaviors, language skills and mood, and most importantly, try to practice response flexibility when the unexpected happens. Sometimes your child will learn more from how you respond than from what you say.
