Catch Kids Doing Good!
A good finder is a parent, teacher, or friend that is always looking for those good things that others do. It’s all too natural for us to look for the negative and certainly we’re going to find what we look for. Most parents and teachers constantly tell kids what they did wrong or tell them to stop misbehaving.
At Life Skill, our instructors are trained to ignore negative behavior. For instance, when the class is lining up and everybody’s supposed to be standing at attention, if one child is spinning around or laying down on the floor, natural tendency that most parents have would be to yell at that child and say, “Hey, stand up. Come on, pay attention.”
That does a couple of negative things that we want to stay away from. First, it reinforces that behavior. If we’re giving that behavior attention, they’re going to do more of that. Kids crave attention! So, if misbehaving gets them attention, they’re likely to misbehave more.
Secondly, negative focus stops the entire class and focuses everyones’ attention right on that one behavior. Therefore, now all the other kids watching may begin to think, “Well, if they do it, why can’t I do it?”
Then, a flood of misbehavior may rise! We may have to address three or four other students at some point wanting to try the same thing. What we can do is simply ignore that behavior and tell the kids “I’m looking for the person who’s standing right at attention.
Attention means hands tight at your sides, back straight, chin up, eyes forward! Great! Jimmy! I love that stance!” Life Skill instructors are trained to spotlight students that are doing the behavior that I want. That’s a good finder.
Eventually, each student that’s on the floor is going to get the message that if you want my attention and if you want to get a high five, you need to do what we’re asking for.
So, at home, instead of trying to fix negative behavior, if we just simply ignore it and set guidelines with how we want their behavior to be, we’re going to see a lot better results. And more importantly, we’re going to be a lot less frustrated.
At Life Skill, instead of ordering it and demanding good behavior, we encourage them and guide them in a fun way.
Hopefully, you found this type of information useful.
Thank you ahead of time, for not giving up on your future Black Belt Leaders.
I know that they’ll really appreciate it later in life.
