Most Martial Arts all look pretty similar from the outside.
But, what’s on the inside of Life Skill?
It is something quite different.
When I began teaching in 1986 and opened Life Skill in 1990, I taught traditional Chinese Martial Arts. Pretty good stuff actually! I even won a gold medal in China!
But… I quickly realized that I wanted to go deeper. By collaborated with Child Psychologists, Multi-School owners, and Personal Development coaches, we enhanced our program with the Life Skills:
Respect, Discipline, Confidence, Communication, Honesty, Self Esteem
To help students really live the best life they can, our team committed to using the martial arts as a vehicle to teach these Life Skills.
Soon, we enhanced it again by developing the Black Belt Leadership Program. We instilled a methodology of helping our students become extremely confident public speakers. It worked great! Believe it or not… Some of our instructors were actually really shy kids before graduating our Black Belt Leadership Program!
This step lead us to develop a Certified Instructor Program (C.I.T.), and AI (Assistant Instructor Program). We used this curriculum to train our Leadership Program graduates how to teach group classes and potentially run their own Life Skill Academy.
What’s next?
In 2019, we began enhancing Life Skill to yet another stage of development. Inside each class, we are incorporating a new methodology of learning called Stages. Why?
Martial arts = self defense against a human.
Martial Arts + Stages = Self Defense Against Robots!
Artificial Intelligence is here and improving daily. By 2040, it will be DOMINANT in the work force. But… What a Robot can’t do is Think, Create, and Innovate.
Recently, I became one of the first Certified Instructors in the United States in a form of pattern recognition that assists children in learning. This revolutionary educational methodology, developed over the past 40 years, helps to expand the mathematical imagination of children through play. Its creator, Opher Brayer received the 2018 Tribeca Disruptive Innovation Award in Education for this work. He created the Stages Methodology to help parents help their children become enhanced learners. Many drills that you have seen kids practicing in class were designed to develop the skills of:
- Pattern Recognition,
- Pattern Design, Analogy and
- Real Time Composition.
These skills, according to Brayer, are the ABCs of innovation, the foundations of polymath thinking. Hopefully, you found this type of information useful and thank you ahead of time, for not giving up on your future Black Belt Leaders.
I know that they’ll really appreciate it later in life.
