As a parent, you want your child to be happy and successful. But, when it comes to kids and chores, there seems to be a lot of tension in the air. What if your child actually loved doing their chores? Imagine how much easier parenting would be! Well, believe it or not, that’s actually possible. Keep reading to find out how.
In the book, Chop Wood Carry Water, author Joshua Medcalf explains how to fall in love with the process and do what it takes for sustained success. He emphasizes self-discipline on an individual’s journey of self-improvement by teaching them to appreciate small things they may have previously overlooked or given little thought before now considering their importance when making life changes that lead towards maximizing happiness.
At Life Skill Academy, we have our unique Life Skill Success System that includes long and short term goal setting. Most people are aware of the long term goal… Black Belt. And some parents are aware that to succeed in earning a Black Belt, students test each cycle to earn the colored belts, like Yellow, orange, green… But, the short term goals are our hidden secret Im going to share with you today.
Every two weeks the coaches give students a short term goal called a Blue Stripe Challenge. These challenges are simple tasks that provide a way for kids to use their Life Skills of Discipline and Focus outside the martial arts school. To earn the Blue Stripe students must have parents take a video or picture of them performing things like cleaning their bedroom, making their bed, taking out the trash, or trying new foods!
By letting them focus on the small steps of the journey, instead of always worrying about the good grades needed to graduate, or even the Black Belt at the end of the journey, Life Skill Kids concentrate on what they must to do now. By focusing on the process, they’ll see more progress, have more motivation, and have a fun doing it!
Like in archery, the difference between a good and great is all in the details. The small things we do, like posture or breathing can have an impact on our accuracy when shooting at targets. So, as in our daily life, each day is full of small tasks that can make or break our success. We must be consistent in doing them if we want to reach the big things – just as with shooting targets!
Our academy is located on a 3 acre wooden lot, with koi ponds, waterfalls and bamboo groves. Many families who visit our compound love the bamboo. But little know about how we grow bamboo. It took over 23 years for us to get from two trees to hundreds!
We first needed to find the right kind of bamboo, then make sure we gave it enough water everyday for the first three months. But… nothing much happened! After a year went by watering regularly and we still couldn’t see much change. But, each year bit more and more sprouted up from the earth and now we have a real forest with trails that families love to walk through and kids love hiding in!
Big dreams are not easy, but the small steps like doing small household chores, or chopping wood, carrying water, can be simple over time and lead young people to growing bamboo, or earning a Black Belt in Life. The Life Skill system is a great opportunity for kids to learn the skills they need to achieve their goals.
There’s never been an easier time for your child to reach his or her potential as a successful person in society. Give us a call today and we’ll be happy to schedule a trial class so you can experience it firsthand!
