One of the things I LOVE about the culture in our school is that we have some amazing parents that are always positive and looking for ways to help their children succeed.

Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of training some great kids who were supported by their amazing parents and I always like to share some of the SUCCESS TIPS that I’ve learned from them…

1. Be the best version of yourself – While we often focus on different team-building activities and partner drills throughout the class, martial arts is really an individual sport.  Each student has their own strengths and weaknesses, so it’s important to remember not to compare your child to other kids in class.

Instead of comparing progress, we focus on their individual progress and growth. Life Skill coaches are committed to helping our students become the best versions of themselves that they can be.

In his book “Best Self: Be You, Only Better”, author Mike Bayer states “The real problem is that people are living lives that are incongruent with their authentic selves either because they’re following in their family’s footsteps instead of carving their own path, or they’re doing what worked for them ten years ago but simply doesn’t anymore, they’ve closed themselves off to what life has to offer because of fear or any number of other reasons. Every situation is unique.”

2. Be involved – One of the most gratifying things for kids in our classes is when they have a victory in class and their parent is there to share the experience with them.

Sometimes just the simple smile or thumbs up from mom or dad gives them an instant feeling of pride.

While we understand that, as a parent, life can be crazy busy at times, we always encourage parents to come in, watch class, and be a part of their child’s training experience.

It’s also a great way to learn some training drills that you can use to help your child practice at home.

3. Be their accountability partner – Growing up, I was involved in many different activities and, like all kids, there were days when I would rather stay home and watch tv (we didn’t have iPads back then, lol!).

Kids are very present-minded. In other words, if they’re enjoying an activity, they won’t want to leave it for anything else. This is often the reason why parents have trouble getting their child out the door on time (the struggle is real).

Luckily, my parents were amazing accountability partners for me. If I didn’t feel like going to basketball or karate, they still made sure that I went because they knew it was good for me and that I would end the class or activity with a smile on my face.

This is an essential part of helping your child create a habit of following through even when they don’t initially feel like doing something.

These are just some of the success tips that many parents have implemented throughout their child’s martial arts journey and I’m sure you will discover even more.

We are extremely grateful to have your family here at our school and we are so excited about the future of your family’s martial arts journey!
