While fear can be helpful in some situations, such as motivating us to stay safe, it can also hold us back from reaching our full potential. To go after our dreams, we’ll have to face our fears. But, first we should investigate further to fully understand…
What is Fear?
Most would say it’s the feeling you get when something scary happens, but that’s not actually what fear is. Fear is a lot more complex than that, and understanding it can help you overcome it. In this post, we’ll take a closer look at fear and discuss some of the different affects of fear. We’ll also talk about how to cope with fear and manage it to your advantage. So if you’re interested in learning more, keep reading!
Many people give up early on their goals, on their relationship, or their life’s dream because of fear. For some, fear is the cause of self-doubt. For others it’s the voice in our head causing them to hesitate. For others it’s a daily overwhelming emotion that causes them to procrastinate, and prevents them from achieving their dreams. Still others become stifled, and give up on things before they even start!
Everyone has FEAR. But, We can gain power in ourselves when we realize that the people who we are doing the things we are afraid to do aren’t less fearful than we are, they’re just a little more courageous. While, most people think that courage is the lack of fear, at Life Skill Academy, our coaches teach students that courage is actually the product of fear. It’s not about trying to get rid of fear, it’s learning how we can use that emotion as fuel and motivation for our efforts.
The main goal of studying self defense is to become our own bodyguard. To reach this attainable gaol, we need to start by thinking that our job title is now ‘Fear Manager’. One of the most important skills you can ever develop is learning how to manage our fear. Coach Tony Blauer said:

“Fear dissipates when the stimulus that triggered it no longer holds you hostage.

To do this you must change your relationship with fear.”

The mind is powerful. The gift of thought controls our bodies, and it can be used for good or bad depending on how we use the power that has been given to us all.
If we focus too much time thinking about what’s wrong with ourselves (eagerly looking out from different angles), then negativity becomes an emotional weight which makes everything else seem impossible; but if instead we will change our life, when we change our relationship with fear.

“You’ll get very good at being a ‘Fear Manager’

when you learn to practice courage.”

This is such an awesome quote from Deepak Chopra. It’s so true that we have all learned how to be fearful, but what if there was another way? Our minds are powerful tools in our lives and they can either help us or hinder on this journey called life–I personally would like them with me every step of the way!
Fear is an inescapable part of life. But the good news is that you can learn to manage it well, and live a more courageous existence! The idea that we will ever get rid – or even just minimize- our fear isn’t true; there’ll always be events which create real hammers for our heads.
We all experience real emergencies in our lives, but being a ‘fear manager’ also requires practice and time goes by fast when we’re doing things that make us feel courageous like exploring new places or taking challenges head-on without shrinking back out into safety mode!

In his book “Making Friends With Fear“, author Tony Blauer teaches these 7 important points to managing fear:

1. Fear is contagious. But so is courage.

2. Always choose courage.
3. Courage is like a muscle, you can exercise it by practicing it.
4. Practice courage by changing your relationship with fear.
5. Managing fear is the gateway to all success.
6. You can’t be brave if you’re not afraid.
7. When you change your relationship with fear, you change your life.
